CAAPC Services

The primary responsibility of the College Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center (CAAPC) is to develop, implement and evaluate alcohol abuse prevention programs that target Virginia Tech students, the Virginia Tech campus environment, and the Blacksburg environment.

Center Services

The following services are available through CAAPC:

Education Campaigns

CAAPC creates, delivers and evaluates a number of educational campaign related to alcohol use and abuse, including social norms marketing, alcohol overdose, low-risk drinking, negative secondary outcomes, and motivating students to take an active role in alcohol abuse prevention.
Outreach CAAPC staff provide educational programs to fraternities, sororities, residence halls, and other student groups who request presentations. Programs are interactive and tailored to meet the needs of the particular group.
Training CAAPC staff will customize, deliver, and/or evaluate alcohol-related training's for members of the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg Community. We have implemented training's for student organizations, staff, faculty, administrators, members of the Blacksburg community, and colleges, universities and community organizations in the Commonwealth. We are also involved in a number of areas related to alcohol use and abuse, including campus violence, sexual assault, and drug use.
Evaluation CAAPC administers an annual survey (in February) of student alcohol use and related outcomes, beliefs, and perceptions. In addition, CAAPC administers a wellness survey every three years (next administration February 2005). The Director has extensive expertise in the program evaluation using both quantitative and qualitative methods, including focus groups, intercept interviews, and surveys.
Consultation The Center provides free consulting services on program development and evaluation to the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg Community. The Director has also consulted with numerous colleges, universities, and community organizations in Virginia and around the United States.
