The following activities are the highest priority items in the university alcohol plan, and are currently being addressed:
- Coordination of University efforts to reduce high-risk and illegal drinking.
- Evaluation of alcohol abuse prevention efforts.
- Dissemination of data on alcohol use to the VT community.
- Development and institutionalization of alcohol abuse prevention programs.
- Networking within the University, the Blacksburg Community and Commonwealth of Virginia.
Full implementation of these initiatives are dependent on additional resources:
- Involve faculty in the prevention of alcohol abuse and the reduction of alcohol-related negative outcomes on the Virginia Tech campus.
- Increase campus and community networking that seeks to reduce the illegal and abusive use of alcohol on the Virginia Tech campus and in the Blacksburg community.
- Increase efforts to seek additional resources for the development and implementation of alcohol abuse prevention efforts at Virginia Tech.
- Increase outreach efforts to colleges and universities within the Commonwealth of Virginia by providing technical assistance and consulting services.
- Facilitate cooperative research efforts among faculty and the Division of Student Affairs by a) providing research opportunities for faculty and students, and b) seeking local, state and federal grants.
These will be addressed as funding becomes available from university, local, state or federal sources:
- Implement and support curriculum infusion activities that integrate alcohol abuse education and prevention into the curriculum of academic courses offered at Virginia Tech.
- Address student issues related to alcohol abuse, including a) the abuse of other drugs which are often associated with alcohol abuse, and b) violence prevention.
- Provide support for increased law enforcement activities on the Virginia Tech campus and in the Blacksburg community.
- Promote the visibility of alcohol abuse prevention programming at the state and national level by increasing consulting activities and the dissemination of successful research-based prevention programs and activities.
